While in Verona for Vinitaly 2014, we took the opportunity to visit the local wine producers with esteemed winemaker, Piergiorgio Castellani, of the prestigious Castellani family.
He first took us to Tenuta di Ceppaiano, a personal project of Piergiorgio Castellani and just one of the estates belonging to the Castellani portfolio. Situated 30 metres above sea level on the Tuscan coast and comprising of over 50 hectares of specialised vineyards, Tenuta di Ceppaiano specialises in Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot and Montepulciano.
We also visited Poggio al Casone, a charming resort situated on a wine estate in Tuscany, for a special tasting of their produce.
Surrounded by 40 acres of organic vineyards, the ancient Villa and two cottages have been finely restored in Tuscan style and served as the perfect setting to sample some of the local produce.
One particular highlight was visiting the biodynamic vineyards at Tenuta di Burchino, located in Terricciola, a medieval village on the Pisan Hills. The estate has a rich clay soil, and every vineyard is strategically positioned for perfect exposure and ventilation. The organic grapes grown here are the key ingredient for the highly awarded L'Antico Chianti biologico DOCG.
