The original rustic farmhouse of Tuscany's Fattoria Le Pupille estate, sits amidst 12 hectares of rolling green vineyards. The recognisable silhouette of the same farmhouse also graces their wine labels.
From a small family wine estate, Le Pupille has become a modern centre for entrepreneurial viticultural in the region. This can be attributed to the incredible work and dedication of the tenacious Elisabetta Geppetti.
Knowing from age 20 where her true passions lay, Elisabetta left the university halls for winemaking and the beauty of the vineyards, replanting vines of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grapes. By 1985, her labour began to bear fruit and with the assistance of Giacomo Tachis' technical brilliance, the estate began to develop and thrive. In 1987 the estate produced its first appellation of the now world renowned Saffredi, the wine that has made Maremma synonymous with excellence.
Dubbed the ‘Lady of Maremma’, Elisabetta’s entrepreneurial spirit lead her in 1992 to be named the first female president of a consortium. It was the foundation year of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium and she was also recipient of ‘Winemaker of the Year’ - all while raising five children.
Elisabetta explains “I understood that I wanted to make wine at the age of 20, during one of the many harvests in the family estate. I have inherited my love for wine from my grandfather, and then a passion grew through its own channels. I wanted to make great wines and I wanted to do it here, in this beloved land.
“I feel that everyone, including myself, is the product of our land. I understood that wine is, and has to be, bonded with the history of the men who live here, it has to converse and grow with them. This land is my choice of life.”
With innumerable expansions, innovations and experiments over the years, Le Pupille's estate now reaches an impressive 75 hectares of vineyards, a veritable mosaic of varietals, across the stunning lands of Maremma.
And today, Elisabetta and her family continue to use their love of the land to produce some of Tuscany’s finest wines, see our range here.
