Ahead of their 20th harvest, Planeta has released tasting notes for three of its wines.
The Brut D.O.C. Sicilia Spumante Metodo Classico involves cultivaion of indigenous grapes in a classic method. It's a surprising idea – a traditional method sparkling wine from Etna – that while unusual, works very well. Formed thanks to the fresh acidity of early harvest Carricante and the mineral rich lava soil.
The result is a wine that exhibits floral and citrus notes with bright minerality and a fine and persistent perlage. The wine is soft and delicate on the palate and exhibits flavours of citrus and passion fruit. The finish is characterised by Mediterranean aromas of juniper, sage and rosemary.
A perfect wine to start or end any evening, its crisp acidity make it an ideal match for fried or oily dishes. At Planeta, it is served with chickpea fritters and focaccia ragusana (Ragusan stuffed flat bread).
The Etna Rosso 2013 D.O.C. hails from Planeta's just completed and newly built Feudo di Mezzo winery, which lies in the heart of Etna viticulture. Produced from Nerello Mascalese grapes it is the result of searching for the modern version of this established vine that is now cultivated in the unique terroir of Etna.
It is characterised by vanilla, black cherry, wild strawberry, and a hint of floral, and manages to be full bodied yet smooth. Expressive intense fruit notes with more complex aromas of forest floor, myrtle and sweet spice are evident in this wine that evolves into a winning red. The palate is engaging, with mineral notes, rhubarb and black pepper.
A versatile wine to be enjoyed daily with simple dishes like pasta with tomato sauce or more sophisticated plates of meat or fish. Planeta serves the red with fried porcini mushrooms and Timballo (traditional capellini pasta and cheese cake).
The Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese DOC SICILIA 2012 is named for the historic eruption of 1614, legendary for having lasted 10 years – the longest ever known – stopping just on the borders or the vineyards to Nerello Mascalese. High black land confers an elegant, distinguished and balanced style.
From the volcanic sands of Mt Etna, this 100% Nerello Mascalese draws its strong taste and exceptional aromas of incense, medicinal herbs, hibiscus and wild fennel. A bright and lively wine that expresses the character and sophistication of the great red wines of mountains at a latitude close to Africa. The tannins are compact and elegant. The generosity and sweetness of wild berry and blackcurrent on the palate mix with notes of incense, beeswax and a touch of saline invite one to return to the glass.
The bold character of this wine makes it a wonderful match for rich dishes such as game, truffle based dishes and rock fish also with rich sauces complesse. It is served by Planeta with rabbit in sweet and sour sauce or meatballs cooked in lemon leaves.
