A sixth-generation family commended for their classic Italian liqueurs.
After the announcement of the World's 50 Best Bars 2013 earlier this year, a prestigious list of bar owners, managers and head mixologists were invited to participate in a survey outlining their best selling and trending brands in the past 12 months.
Arquilla is delighted to announce that Luxardo, the only Sambuca within the list, was nominated the number 5 Best Selling Brand and number 7 Best Trending Brand within the World's Best Bars.
Luxardo was founded by Girolamo Luxardo and his wife, Maria Canevari, in Zara in 1821. Zara is a port city on the Dalmatian coast, which is now part of the republic of Croatia. Girolamo, a citizen of Genova, was sent to Zara as a consular representative, moving there with his family in 1817. As was customary at the time, his wife dedicated herself to making liqueurs at home, with a specific interest in perfecting a "rosolio maraschino". The liqueur she produced was of such a high quality it attracted the attention of family, friend and serious connoisseurs.
Her success inspired Girolamo to found the distillery and after an initial 8 years of research and production, Girolamo obtained an exclusive "privilege" from the Emperor of Austria, acknowledging their superior quality. Luxardo continues to bear the denomination of "Privilegiata Fabrica Maraschino Excelsior".
The sixth generation of the family is today head of the company, not only producing the Maraschino which made the brand famous, but a whole range of classic Italian liqueurs such as Amaretto, Grappa, Limoncello and of course, Sambuca.
