Max Allen, of Australian Gourmet Traveller, recently wrote of how Sicily is producing some of the world’s most interesting wines and made particular mention of three of Arquilla’s superb Sicilian producers; Donnafugata, Planeta and Terre Nere.
Hailing Donnafugata and Planeta as “two of the leading locals”, Allen offered high praise for his favourites from the producer’s offerings.
Allen applauded Planeta’s “must-try” Cerasuolo di Vittoria for its “blend of fleshy nero d’Avola and the spicy local frappato grape.
Allen goes on to praise Donnafugata’s “seriously impressive” Nero d’Avola Mille e una Notte and “incredible, try-before-you-die” Passito di Pantelleria Ben Rye as “two wines that have done more than boost the island’s reputation.
While the article describes Donnafugata and Planeta’s wines as perfect for the modern wine world, a style that “wows international wine critics”, Allen goes on to explore the exciting trend toward smaller scale, natural winemaking, saluting Terre Nere as one such producer.
Allen makes note of how Terre Nere is “making a compelling case for the local red grapes nerello Mascalese and nerello cappucio”. The article pays particular attention to the producer’s beautiful Etna Rossos, a blend of two varieties hailed as having “the ethereal perfume, the transparency and the fine, fine tannins you’d expect to find in a top nebbiolo from Piedmont, not the hot islands of Sicily.”
