Celebrated wine writers Jancis Robinson and Julia Harding have recently sampled two vintages from Champagne Philipponnat's 2004 bottling.
While noting that in general, 2002 produced a far richer wine, Robinson still proclaims 2004 a very "successful vintage" with some "very exciting wines that are just starting to provide great drinking", many of which are described to have "wonderful precision and intensity".
The Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2004 showed flavours of "orange, ginger, biscuit" while being "really tight on the palate". While not quite ready for drinking, Jancis reported that the vintage has "amazing potential" and was her favourite of all wines surveyed at this particular tasting. Comprised of 65% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay from a single-vineyard bottling, the recommended drinking is between 2015 - 2030.
The Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2004 Champagne was described as "the star" of a tasting against the likes of Bollinger and Clicquot. Described as "wonderfully rich and explosive", flavours included "smoke, orange peel and quince" with "beautiful build and persistence". Three out of eight tasters, including the organiser of the event, rated the Philipponnat "the best". Drinking is recommended between 2014 - 2030.
Perfect for a special occasion, Robinson notes that "you would never buy these wines casually", as they are vintages that "float above the realm of regular wine purchases".
Congratulations to Champagne Philipponat for their outstanding reviews.
